Scholarship Safety Guide
Protect yourself from scams with these essential rules.
Never pay to apply
Legitimate scholarships are free to apply for. Any program that asks for payment, a credit card, or a "processing fee" upfront is a scam.
Use official sources
Apply directly through your state's higher education authority, your school's financial aid office, or the trusted resources listed on this page.
Complete FAFSA first
Most state grants and many scholarships require a completed FAFSA. File it as early as possible — many programs have limited funds and award on a first-come basis.
Check deadlines carefully
State grant deadlines vary and are often earlier than you expect. Some programs award funds until they run out, so earlier is always better.
Verify the organization
Look up any scholarship organization before applying. Check their website domain, physical address, and whether they're registered as a nonprofit or government entity.
Keep your personal information safe
A real scholarship will never ask for your Social Security Number, bank account details, or passwords as part of an application.
State Scholarship & Grant Programs
Most states run their own scholarship and grant programs for residents. These are in addition to federal aid and never require repayment. Find your state below.
